Theme 1: What is “Interaction with the working community” all about?

I chose to reflect the tasks through the lenses of my own field, which is tourism. It is something that I feel very strongly about, since I have studied and worked in the industry for 14 years now. Greatest compliment I have heard, by the way, concerning my vocation what something that my opponent said in my thesis seminar: “Tourism is in you”:)

Interaction with working life in my field, tourism, is very common. I’ll explain here, how we do it in projects for example. It is quite simple, but requires work.

The project manager discusses with the teachers about the needs of the project while the teachers explain what kind of contents and learning outcomes are required in courses. Then we can see, how the contents of the project fits the courses and the project can then for example set a task for the group and work as a commissioner. Another thing that I can do is to offer a training place for a student. In our institute there are kind of basic practicums and expert practicums. During their practical training the students have to conduct a development task, so this is very suitable way to work with students because we don’t practically offer any training for basic work in the projects. At least I always recommend project work for people, who already have some expertise of the industry. We can also act as a commissioner for a thesis. We have many great examples of thesis papers that benefit the project. All the integration should be planned so that it benefits both, the student and the project.

The same way we work in all the working life interaction. It is a great way of keeping up with what’s happening in working life and also help the surrounding community.
